Motorcyclist collides with an automobile in Bucks County

Motorcyclists are supposed to share in every privilege that other motorists do. Still, they are often ignored as equals among other drivers. Stories are constant in Pennsylvania and throughout the country about motorcycle accidents involving "unseen" riders. Motorcycles are vulnerable vehicles because of their comparative size. Additionally, riders do not enjoy the same physical protection as car and truck occupants.

An accident in Bucks County recently killed a motorcyclist and his passenger. Police reports state that the bike struck a Chevrolet Impala as it turned onto Knowles Avenue from Street Road in Upper Southampton Township.

The 28-year-old Impala driver and 26-year-old passenger were slightly hurt. The man and woman on the Yamaha motorcycle were killed.

The operator of the motorcycle, a 52-year-old Trevose man, lived only long enough to reach a nearby hospital. His 50-year-old female passenger was thrown from the motorcycle and died at the accident scene. Both riders had been wearing helmets.

Upper Southampton and Northampton police have not closed the investigation. Two days following the fatal Saturday evening accident, investigators were at the crash scene taking measurements and looking for clues. Police are also searching for more evidence from witnesses.

In the meantime, investigators will attempt to find out why the Impala driver chose to pull into mainline traffic when he did.

Car drivers involved in motorcycle accidents frequently tell police they did not see the motorcycle or realize how fast it was traveling. Drivers are required to remain alert for all vehicles and pedestrians on the road.
