Area bicyclist severely injured in collision with UPS truck

During winter in Erie, it's likely that bicycling is little more than wishful thinking for most people. But there are some hardy individuals who take to the streets on bikes regardless of the frigid temperatures. They just dress for that. And as far as the snow goes; there are tire options available that make it possible to ride in relative safety.

What bicyclists can't control, though, is how others on the road are likely to drive, even professional drivers. The result can be a serious truck accident that can put even the most stalwart of cyclists out of commission. When the accident is the result of trucker negligence, the right to seek compensation exists. And it's worth consulting an attorney about what legal options may exist.

What brings this to mind is word of a

that happened last Friday in Millcreek.

According to the Erie Times-News, a man on a bicycle was riding in the area of West Grandview Boulevard and Pittsburgh Avenue when he was struck by a United Parcel
Service truck. It happened not long after sunset at about 6 p.m.

Authorities say the cyclist was thrown from his bike and suffered severe injuries -- though they are said not to be life threatening. He was taken to the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center Harnot. According to one report on WSEE, the cyclist may have fractured his leg.

At the time this is written, there's no information available on the cyclist's condition. Nor is there any word about whether authorities issued any citations in connection with the accident.
