Semi-truck collision kills motorcyclist in Northampton County

Commercial truck drivers are supposed to receive extensive training before they are legally eligible to operate tractor-trailers. This training includes education on how to watch for smaller vehicles and follow the rules of the road as accidents involving large trucks can easily lead to fatalities and necessary legal action.

A commercial vehicle collision in Northampton County has taken the life of a local motorcyclist. The 30-year-old was riding his 2005 Harley-Davidson motorcycle westbound on Silvercrest Road when a 2014 Volvo tractor-trailer traveling eastbound attempted to make a left turn across the oncoming lane. The collision occurred around 3:50 p.m. on June 2 near a local Trader Joe's warehouse location.

Responders on the scene initially requested helicopter transport for the motorcyclist due to the extent of his injuries, but the call was cancelled and replaced with a ground transport request. Early reports indicated that leg amputation may be necessary, but the rider ultimately succumbed to his injuries. He was wearing a helmet at the time of the accident. The driver of the truck came away uninjured, and he was reportedly wearing a seatbelt.

The accident is still under investigation, and no criminal charges had been filed at the time of a report on June 2.

Truck drivers are held to a higher standard of safety than drivers of smaller vehicles. Those involved in accidents involving commercial trucks, or surviving family members of those killed in truck accidents, may need to speak with a personal injury attorney about a full investigation of the crash. Even when no criminal charges follow a truck accident, there may be legal avenues for pursuing justice.
