Whiplash often occurs as a result of rear-end car accidents

In Pennsylvania and elsewhere, it is common to see rear-end auto collisions pretty much every day. While quite of few of these car accidents have relatively minor outcomes, injuries are still possible. Whiplash is believed one of the most common injuries following a rear-end auto wreck, and it can result in physical, financial and emotional damages that can last for years.

Whiplash, also called a neck sprain, happens when a person's neck is swiftly forced backward and then forward. When this occurs, the tissues in the neck can become overstretched and tear which can cause pain and a variety of other issues. Some include:

  • Headaches
  • Dizziness
  • Back, neck, shoulder pain
  • Muscle spasms
  • Nerve damage

The severity of one's whiplash injury may not be immediately apparent. For some, it can take time -- days or weeks -- for the full effects to show. As soon as symptoms are felt, it is wise to seek medical attention at one's earliest convenience.

Various tests can be used to diagnose whiplash, including X-rays, MRI and CT scans. If a diagnosis is positive, treatments for this type of injury include neck stabilization, pain medication -- either prescription or over the counter -- and, in the worst cases, surgery. Sadly, even with treatment, chronic pain may result.

Even minor cases of whiplash can affect one's personal and professional life. Pennsylvania residents who are the victims of rear-end car accidents and have suffered injuries such as whiplash may be entitled to seek compensation for their losses. Monetary relief may be sought by filing a personal injury claim in civil court with the assistance of a skilled attorney.
