Watch out! 3 work-zone safety tips to keep you safe

Work zones can quickly become dangerous in the summer months. From increased traffic to hot weather, there are plenty of construction hazards out there. Fortunately, there are some things you can do to stay safe on the job.

Here are a few ways you can make sure you and your coworkers aren't caught off guard and don't suffer an injury while you're at work. Stay safe this summer, and take these into consideration.

1. Be as visible as possible

It's hot, so you might not always want to wear all your work gear. Remember that it's important to do so. Taking off a brightly colored vest might seem like no big deal, but to a driver passing through the area, that's a warning that a worker is there.

2. Keep hydrated on the job

Dangerous drivers aren't the only potentially dangerous thing you'll face. Dehydration can put workers at risk of severe injuries and death. Heat exhaustion and heat stroke can be difficult to recover from if they're not caught in time. Keep plenty of water on hand. Having sports drinks available is also a good idea, since they replenish minerals lost through sweat. If you notice anyone starting to look faint or overheated, keep a vehicle on site that has air conditioning. This short break in the air can make a difference in that individual's health.

3. Know when to stay away from the work site

Bad weather is a serious problem for construction teams. Knowing when it's too bad to continue working can help you avoid injuries due to lightning, hazardous drivers and high winds. Visibility is low during storms, so it's best to keep everyone off the roads.

These are a few tips for staying safe at your work site this summer. Take the time to review your safety protocols and procedures before you head out, so everyone has the best chance possible of returning home safely at the end of the day.
