Pennsylvania workers' compensation: Q and A, part 1

No one really thinks about work injuries and how to cover them until they happen. The truth is, the vast majority of employers in the state of Pennsylvania are required by law to supply workers' compensation insurance coverage. This article will cover some common questions about this insurance over the next several weeks.

Question number one for this week is: What exactly is workers' compensation? This is a form of insurance offered to employees in the event that they suffer any type of injury or illness while on the job. Family members of employees may also be entitled to access these benefits if their loved one is killed as a result of a work-related injury.

Question number two for the week is: Who is covered? Just about every employee is covered under some form of compensation law. Those not covered typically include casual employees, volunteers and agricultural workers -- among a few others.

Question number three, and the final question for this week, is: What does workers' compensation insurance cover? It covers quite a bit, actually. Those who can prove that their injuries are work-related typically have their medical bills covered, receive paid time off during the recovery period, receive disability payments -- if applicable -- and get help finding a new job or receive job training in the event that they cannot return to their previous positions -- among various other benefits. Family members of those involved in fatal work accidents may have access to death benefits.

Workers' compensation insurance protects employees from having to cover their losses out of pocket. It also protects Pennsylvania employers from costly litigation. It certainly has its benefits, but it is not a perfect system.
