Workers' compensation: Van explosion kills 1, injures 1

Pennsylvania workers in various industries are exposed to flammable substances and materials. Workplace accidents that involve fires and explosions are the subject of many workers' compensation claims that are filed every year. Two more will likely follow soon after the death of one worker and injuries suffered by another in an explosion.

According to the Pennsylvania State Police, the blast occurred on a recent Wednesday in the parking lot of a trucking company. Their report indicates that a tractor-trailer driver arrived in the parking lot and parked his vehicle. Another employee of the company pulled up in a van to pick up the trucker and take him to another area.

Reportedly, the van was loaded with flammable materials that included welding gear and oxygen tanks. Officials say the van exploded at the moment when the truck driver got into it. The 69-year-old truck driver, from Harrisburg, suffered injuries that were not life-threatening, and he was transported to a hospital. However, the driver of the van, a 65-year-old Lebanon man, was killed in the blast.

Authorities say both the Occupational Safety and Health Administration and Pennsylvania State Police are involved in investigations into this tragedy. In the meantime, the surviving family members of the deceased worker will be able to seek financial assistance with the costs of end-of-life arrangements along with lost income. Similarly, the injured victim can seek compensation to cover medical expenses and lost wages. An experienced Pennsylvania workers' compensation attorney can help with the navigation of injury and death benefits claims.
