3 great ways to avoid a DUI

A DUI has the potential to hurt your life in many ways. You may lose your job, be unable to get an apartment you want or struggle with financial losses after paying fines and penalties. Your insurance may increase. Your friends and family may even treat you differently.

The good news is that it's easy to avoid a DUI if you plan in advance. Here are three ways to avoid getting a DUI no matter what time of year it is.

1. Consider ride-sharing services

If you plan to head out for a night on the town, it might be wise to book a ride in advance through a ride-sharing or taxi service. These services generally allow you to book several hours or days in advance, or you can call when you're ready to be picked up.

The nice thing about ride-share services is that you can set up a payment in advance when you're sober. Then, if you're too intoxicated to run your credit card successfully, you won't have to worry about it.

2. Use public transportation

Another thing you can try is using public transportation. While public transportation may close down by 10 or 11 p.m. on certain days of the week, it's still a viable option if you've been out drinking with dinner or earlier in the evening. Public transportation is common in areas near restaurants and businesses, so it might be a good option for you, depending on where you're located.

3. Keep friends' phone numbers handy

In the case that all else fails, you should keep your friends and family on your speed dial. You mom, dad, colleague or friend is more likely to help you than to turn you down if it is your safety at risk. No one wants to see someone else get hurt.

Even if they are unable to come to get you themselves, they may be able to help you get a ride or call in to book you a hotel room at a hotel within walking distance.

These are just a few of the options that may be open when you're trying to get home safely after drinking. There is never an excuse for driving drunk in this age, because there are so many options for getting home safely. Choose one and remember that you are protecting yourself and others by having a sober driver behind the wheel.
