Building owner, site of shooting death, cited for law violation

The woman who is the listed owner of what was once an Erie social club is in trouble with the law. This comes in the wake of a shooting at the building early last month in which one person was killed and three others were wounded.

At this point, the legal issues being raised by the case appear limited to allegations that the building’s owner knowingly allowed minors to be at the facility after curfew on the night of the shooting. The city curfew for minors is midnight. However, officials say they are also looking into evidence that liquor was being consumed on the premises, despite its not being licensed for such activity.

What may be on the minds of those who were injured in the shooting is whether the owner may be in some way

liable for the injury or death

that resulted.

A question that might be worth asking is whether the owner shouldn’t have done more to prevent the violence? This is something to discuss with an attorney.

According to officials the shooting happened at around 1 a.m. on Jan. 5. Police haven’t said what sparked the shooting. However, a 21-year-old male suspect in the case is slated to appear in court for a preliminary hearing this week.

Police say that officers were outside the building around the time of the shooting ticketing vehicles when they heard shots. They responded and found the four victims. The citation issued to the building owner says that minors were also present and that in addition to alcohol being on the premises, the odor of marijuana was apparent.

A spokesman for the police says people at the scene, including some as young as 14, had paid $5.00 at the door to get in. He says the 54-year-old woman who owns the building was also on the premises at the time.
