Being charged with theft in the state of Pennsylvania is a very serious offense. The consequences of a theft conviction depend largely on the value of the items that were stolen and whether the person accused had been convicted of theft in the past. It would be in someone’s best interest to present the strongest criminal defense possible. Such is the case for five people who were recently arrested in Scranton and accused of stealing vehicles.
According to the Scranton Police Department, a sport utility vehicle and another car were reported stolen from a vehicle repair shop. Evidently, the SUV was involved in an accident and photos of the incident were posted on Facebook. The damage to the vehicle was apparently extensive. Police officers indicated that the stolen car was recovered.
Police officials allegedly attempted to stop the SUV after it was spotted following the crash. Reports state that the driver sped away when police tried to get the driver to pull over. In addition, police say they caught two teenagers after they attempted to run away. An 18-year-old and a 17-year-old were both charged with receiving stolen property.
In another incident, two 18-year-olds and a juvenile were stopped in a car. The police say a stolen license plate was discovered in their vehicle. Efforts are underway to determine if this incident was related to the investigation involving the SUV.
A conviction of theft charges can result in serious consequences. A person may have to pay hefty fines and/or spend a significant amount of time in jail. To minimize the negative impact of theft charges on an individual’s life, it makes sense to rely upon an experienced Pennsylvania criminal defense attorney. A lawyer can be a trusted and invaluable partner throughout the entire legal process.
