Congratulations to Jamestown YMCA and Camp Onyahsi on their sponsorship of the inaugural Chautauqua Lake Big Fish Triathlon. The event, which was held on June 8, 2013, started at beautiful Camp Onyahsi and featured a .93 mile swim, a 24.8 mile bike, and a 6.2 mile run. The course was designed to challenge the participating athletes which it certainly did.
The swim in Chautauqua Lake featured an out and back course. The water was calm and an invigorating 64 degrees. The bike course contained numerous climbs and descents, especially the first eight miles of the course. The run course was relative straight and flat. Every intersection was well marked by advance signs and emergency vehicles. It is hard to believe that Chautauqua County has that many emergency vehicles. Every volunteer firefighter and first responder in Dewitt, Bemus Point, Mayville, and nearby communities seemed to be on hand to assist.
The event was attended by numerous Erie Triathlon Club members. ETC member Dan Pierce won the event with a blazing time of 2:14:22. ETC member Sandi Ruhlman won the women’s division with a time of 2:43:19. Conner Riley Friedman & Weichler attorney Phil Friedman finished 5th overall with a time of 2:28:55.
Big Fish race directors and volunteers should be commended on an extraordinary effort. At the completion of the race, the director announced that next year’s triathlon will be held on June 7. No doubt triathletes from all over the region will be attending this first-class event.
